What dog went to space? The name most people are looking for is Laika. On November 3, 1957, the Soviet Union launched her aboard Sputnik 2, making her the first dog—and the first living creature—to orbit Earth.
That direct answer needs an important qualification. Laika was not the first dog carried on a rocket, and she did not return. Earlier dogs had completed suborbital flights, while later dogs, most famously Belka and Strelka, orbited Earth and came home alive. “Went to space,” “went into orbit,” and “returned from orbit” describe different milestones.
The history is scientifically significant, but it is also ethically difficult. These animals did not volunteer, and many died. Remembering what happened means keeping both the achievement and the cost in view.
Laika was the first dog to orbit Earth
Laika was a small female stray found on the streets of Moscow. Before the flight, she was known as Kudryavka, a name often translated as “Little Curly.” “Laika” is associated with a Russian word for barking and also with northern hunting-dog types; the name by which the world remembers her was not her only name.
Sputnik 2 followed the launch of Sputnik 1 by only a month. The second spacecraft was built quickly as the Soviet Union sought another dramatic first during the early space race. It carried instruments and a pressurized compartment intended to keep a dog alive long enough for researchers to monitor her physical responses.
There was no plan to bring Laika back. At the time, the spacecraft did not have a workable reentry and recovery system for her. The mission was one-way from the start.
For years, public accounts gave conflicting impressions of how long she lived. Later disclosures indicated that she died within hours, after the cabin overheated. The first dogs on rockets flew before Laika
The Soviet program began sending dogs on high-altitude rocket flights years before Sputnik 2. These missions were generally suborbital: the rocket rose above the atmosphere or to the accepted edge of space, then the capsule descended rather than circling Earth.
According to NASA's history of animals in space, Dezik and Tsygan launched together on August 15, 1951, and were recovered successfully. NASA identifies them as the first canine suborbital space travelers. The program flew pairs so researchers could compare results, and it often selected small female dogs, partly because of spacecraft size and the practical design of waste-collection equipment.
Not every early mission succeeded. Some dogs died in launch or recovery failures. Others flew more than once. The record includes names such as Lisa, Smelaya, Malyshka, Albina, Dymka, and Kozyavka, although transliterations and nicknames vary across English-language accounts.
These flights tested pressurized cabins, life-support systems, acceleration, weightlessness, monitoring equipment, parachute recovery, and the basic question of whether a living passenger could survive the trip. The data helped engineers prepare for human spaceflight, but it came through experiments that placed animals under extreme confinement, stress, and risk.
Why did the Soviet program use dogs?
NASA's historical account says Soviet researchers regarded dogs as less fidgety in flight than monkeys. They also favored small animals that could fit inside restricted capsules. Many candidates were strays, selected in the belief that animals accustomed to Moscow's streets could tolerate cold and hardship.
The dogs then underwent training that had little in common with normal companion-animal life. They were confined in increasingly small spaces, exposed to noise and vibration, fitted with sensors and restraint systems, and conditioned for acceleration. Some adapted better than others, but adaptation should not be confused with consent or comfort.
The United States more often used monkeys and chimpanzees in its early biomedical flight research, while other programs sent mice, rats, rabbits, insects, fish, and many additional species. Belka and Strelka orbited Earth and returned alive
The next milestone many readers have in mind belongs to Belka and Strelka. On August 19, 1960, the two dogs traveled aboard a Soviet spacecraft commonly identified with the Korabl-Sputnik or Vostok test program. They spent roughly a day in orbit and returned alive with other biological passengers.
Their recovery showed that a spacecraft could support living animals in orbit and bring them back through reentry. That was a different achievement from Laika's first orbit and an essential step toward a human orbital mission.

Other dogs also flew around this period. Some returned successfully, while others died in launch failures or when recovery systems malfunctioned. A neat list of “famous space dogs” can obscure how experimental and dangerous the program remained.
What is the difference between space and orbit?
A suborbital flight climbs to space but follows an arc back toward Earth without completing a circuit. An orbital flight gains enough sideways velocity to keep falling around Earth rather than directly back to the surface. Returning from orbit adds another set of problems: slowing down, surviving reentry heat and forces, and landing safely.

A more honest memory holds two ideas together: her flight was historically important, and the treatment that produced it deserves moral scrutiny.
The dogs' continuing presence in posters, stamps, illustration, film, and museum collections also shows how portraiture shapes public memory. Images can individualize an animal, but they can also convert a life into a symbol. Looking at how dogs have appeared in art across history offers a useful comparison: a dog's pose, setting, and surrounding objects often tell us as much about human values as they do about the animal depicted.
